Packing Light

Packing is hard – whoever said it wasn’t is a absolute liar. When I travel I like to try and keep with a “color story” if at all possible, as it makes it way easier to narrow down the shoe and accessory options. It also helps keep your suitcases in the “under 50 lb each” range, so you don’t get hit with that insane “over the weight limit” charge.  And believe me I have been there a few times in my life. It’s really not fun to be the crazy chick pulling shit out of one case and throwing it in another to get the weight to balance out before they will finally check your bags curbside at LAX….

I think the key is to try and pack with a color palette in mind so everything works well together. And the goal is to have it be a no brainer once you get to your destination. Things like a wrinkled dress (see above photo) shouldn’t ruin your evening,  just bring it into the bathroom with you when you take a steamy, hot shower and in a few minutes, no wrinkles.

For this Sayulita trip it was all about muted color tones and very light layers as the weather was so warm. I always love gold jewelry against tan skin so I always pack a few interchangeable day/night pieces that don’t seem too “fancy” but still make me feel good.  A couple of big scarves are a must – great for keeping warm on the plane, adding some dimension to a basic outfit when going out at night, and if they are large enough, they can even double as a beach cover-up. In a cool little beach town like this, all you really need are flip flops and some sandals and you are good to go anywhere day or evening. Toss in a swimsuit or two, a beach bag, some good reading material (like the THE LIST which is Sayulita’s new magazine that covers shopping, hotels, local artists, and food) and some sunscreen and you should have plenty of room left in the suitcase for all the purchases you make while out of town.

See, there is a bright side to packing light.
