Little Birds & LA Skateboard Culture

Image
I was invited by the rad girls at WHO WHAT WEAR (thanks Katherine, Hillary & Jessica!) to see an advanced screening of the film LITTLE BIRDS last night at the Soho House here in West Hollywood (which is pretty damn amazing!). I’ve heard buzz about this film & the director Elgin James, so I was stoked to get to see it. It totally did not disappoint. The whole movie was beautifully filmed, & a lot of it was shot at one of my favorite gritty/amazing locations, the Salton Sea, as well as in/around LA. Since this movie also involves LA skateboard culture and the kids in it, that was an added bonus for me. After the film some of the the stars of the movie did a short Q&A panel for us. An you know me, I had some questions about the location, and of course skateboarding (pro skaters Rune Gilfberg, Geoff Rowley, David Gonzales & Arto Saari skated the abandoned backyard pools in the film and it turns out a friend of mine, Matt Meyerson was the skateboarder coordinator – sma

You all know I am addicted to this site in a major way – I shop it before I head off to my shoots at 5 AM for crying out loud (see last weeks Ash Sneakers score above).  Well get ready, because Shopbop has teamed up with  It’s Not About Pretty to give one awesome reader a $100 gift card. What will you spend the dough on? I could think of a ton of things myself – like some rad Rag and Bone boots ,  a pair of Peter Som pants or even one of these cute DKNY dresses . To make that decision even more complex, make sure you check out Shopbop Pinterest for more great ideas. It’s super easy to enter – just leave me a comment below, along with your email address, & tell me what you’re loving at Shopbop.   I will be picking a winner on Saturday, September 8. Contest is open to USA  & International readers.  Good luck!

Peace Out

Photos courtesy of Longboarding for Peace People talk about making a difference but it’s the rare person who actually does something about it. Michael Brooke, publisher of the skateboarding magazine, Concrete Wave   headed off to Israel to do something I find pretty damn  cool. He hooked up with Surfing 4 Peace and the Peres Center for Peace to bring 30 longboards into a war torn country, do skate demos, and encourage Arab and Israel kids to skate together. One rad way to go about promoting World Peace if you ask me. And btw – it looks like girls all over the world dig skateboarding – I’m loving these shots of the girls riding for the first time!   To find out more about Longboarding for Peace click Here

"Hell Yes" To Summer

Image
Shit I am loving right now: This bitchin’ hotel I stayed in recently on the beach in Carlsbad. How rad is that pool right on the beach? Paddleboarding in the cove near my house with friends all morning in crystal clear water that was as warm as a bathtub. Getting to see/hold a SHARK egg for the first time ever. Weird looking isn’t it? This beautiful “fish” surfboard at the Quiksilver Women’s store in Malibu. The shape and colors are radness. A new fashion score. This insane bohho kimono from Clover Canyon. So frigging ME. The best scent ever!!  Zogs Sex Wax now comes in candles. This one is the original coconut smell. This is THE surf wax I used all through my youth. Best shit ever, & it brings back all those lazy summer days spent at the beach surfing & hanging with friends. How was your summer weekend? No Groupies Allowed

Image
Where are the tee shirts that say “I AM the lead singer” or “I want to be the drummer”? I saw these at H&M and was not impressed with the message. Kick some ass and be those things and let the guys drool over how rad YOU are. Groupies are not too cool. And advertising the fact that you are one is worse. #epicfail

Stylin' girls

Image
The rad girls on my styling team – Morgan/assistant, Suzy/seamstress, and Emily/assistant. Could not do what I do with out these amazing, talented, organized & fun girls. They are the BEST! Don’t you love their fun style? Everyday they come to set in something cool and unique. I need to start documenting it all!

It's a 3-Peat!

ESPN Magazine / Photo Patrik Giaridino / Styling Cindy Whitehead Came home after a long day to watch my fav girls Misty & Kerri battle it out for the gold! Best frigging match ever. Both teams were on absolutely fire. So proud of these two. Super nice people, awesome athletes. So deserving! 3 gold medals in a row – AMAZING!!

Go Usa

Image
I was so inspired last night by USA swimmers Katie Ledecky (who is only 15!) and Missy Franklin that my manicurist and I decided to add a little USA pride to my nails this weekend. Seriously, who doesn’t love the Olympics?

Yeah, That.

I took this instagram photo (@sporttsstsylist) down at the beach near my house the other weekend. and it reminded me of this awesome quote. Here’s to all of you “driving someone crazy”  xx

underexposed

UNDEREXPOSED trailer from Amelia Brodka on Vimeo . Underexposed a documentary film by Amelia Brodka / Produced by Brian Lynch So stoked to be attending tonights screening of UNDEREXPOSED – a groundbreaking film about women’s skateboarding by pro skater & filmmaker Amelia Brodka & producer Brian Lynch. A movie like this has been a long time coming and I am so proud of Amelia for putting herself out there and making this documentary. The girl is kick ass, not just at skateboarding but in life. She is a USC grad and an all around amazing person. I am so honored to have been asked by Amelia to moderate the Q&A panel after the screening, it’s a big responsibility and I am really excited to be a part of it! Hope to see you all tonight!
